Mughal emperor akbar red fort
The fort has survived through the onslaught of time, nature and men. The fort spreads over an area of about 94 acres of land. At present, there exist more than two dozens of monuments in the Fort. Abul Fazl, a court historian of Akbar, records that buildings were built here beautifully in Bengali and Gujarati style. Most of these buildings have now disappeared.
Shah Jahan himself demolished some of these in order to make room for his white marble palaces. Later, the British destroyed most of the buildings for raising barracks. Hardly 30 Mughal buildings have survived on the southeastern side. It was also known as the "Lal-Qila" or "Qila-i-Akbari". The fort can be more accurately described as a walled city.
It was later renovated by Shah Jahan. However, in the 15th century, the Chauhan Rajputs occupied it. Soon after, Agra assumed the status of capital when Sikandar Khan Lodi — CE shifted his capital from Delhi and constructed a few buildings in the preexisting fort at Agra. After the first battle of Panipat CEMughals captured the fort and ruled from it.
In CE, Humayun was crowned in it. The fort was given its present appearance during the reign of Akbar — CE. Later, this fort was under the rule of Jats of Bharatpur for 13 years. The fort remained with the Suris tillwhen Humayun recaptured it.
Adil Shah Suri 's general, Hemurecaptured Agra in and pursued its fleeing governor to Delhi where he met the Mughals in the Battle of Tughlaqabad. Realising the importance of its central situation, Akbar made it his capital and arrived in Agra in His historian, Abul Fazlrecorded that this was a brick fort known as 'Badalgarh'. It was in a ruined condition and Akbar had it rebuilt with red sandstone from Barauli area Dhaulpur district, in Rajasthan.
Some 4, builders worked on it daily for eight years, completing it in It was only during the reign of Akbar's grandson, Shah Jahanthat the site took on its current state. Unlike his grandfather, Shah Jahan tended to have buildings made from white marble. When Aurangzeb was victorious among his all brothers, then he imprisoned Shah Jahan in in the same fort only.
The fort was under the Jat rulers of Bharatpur for 13 years. In the fort, they built the 'Ratan Singh ki Haveli'. The fort was invaded and captured by the Maratha Empire in the early 18th century. The Huffington Post. Archived from the original on 19 August Retrieved 27 July The Hindu.
