Finding myself in this position, being pregnant, completely integrated with my intuition and my power, and commanding that space when I gave birth, then commanding space to raise and care for a baby, for some reason, I fell into it in a very natural way.

Was I freaked out? Was it fucking hard? Was it infuriating at times? Of course. But for some reason, I was like, shit, I can do this. That feeling of capability really opened me up as an artist. When it comes to the industry, as a female artist, there are so many judgments. Even when it comes to what we do in our spare time, what we look like, what we want to talk about, what we want to make art about, whether or not we like sex, fashion, love.

I mean, the art world definitely did not want me to have a place in it when I first started making work. So for sure, super early, implanted in the home were conversations and ideas that questioned patriarchal constructs. People would mistakenly refer to my dad as Mr. Becoming an artist in New York during the time that I did, the friends that I made, and the community that instantly embraced me here—for whom I am so abundantly grateful.

I credit my friends and my community who took the time to criticize feminism to me and with me and talk about their experience of feminism. It really opened me up to understand a more intersectional experience. When you look at the work, you have no idea which of these subjects is trans or nonbinary, right? Adopting an explicitly feminist approach, her work explores identity, trauma, and gendered violence, subverting preconceived notions of vulnerability and strength.

Buckman regularly chooses to work with objects symbolically associated with gender. Whilst her oft-adopted boxing gloves hint at a bellicose masculinity, the artist also incorporates vintage fabrics into her work, from lingerie to dishcloths and table linen. Zoe: Because both of my parents are feminists, and because my zoe buckman biography, in particular, is an activist—I feel gender inequality has always been a part of my dialogue.

Tell us about Champ : how does it relate to its site at a hotel and in such a prominent location? Z: This will be my first large-scale public sculpture! One of the most exciting things about this project is the visibility. What I find most moving about this opportunity is when I think about how it will have the chance to transcend the exclusivity of the art world and will be seen by many: from children to bus drivers, Hollywood execs, to the hotel staff.

You come from a country that offers health care to all its citizens and residents. Can you say something about your interest in health care for all and how this is of particular importance to women? Z: I was raised to believe that access to health care is a basic human right and that the country one lives in should provide this service for free.

The UK has its problems, but no one discusses abortion there anymore. Can you talk about how you selected the lyrics by Tupac Shakur and Notorious B. Z: I wanted to put the lyrics of these two murdered rappers and their statements about women both the empowering and degrading into the context of the history of objectification and sex. In order to really look at the how ideas about the female form have developed throughout history, I decided to look at lingerie because it is intimate and personal by nature, but also speaks to the male gaze.
