Richard crooks tenor biography definition

He began singing as a treble in the local church choir at the age of 9 and was encouraged to further his studies in New York where he had lessons with Leon Rothier and Frank La Forge. When his voice broke, developing into a tenor, he began his career cautiously in recital work. He was first heard in opera as Cavaradossi, in Hamburg, in That his career was stopped by illness at an age when he should have been at his vocal best is a great loss to singing.

His basically sound technique should have allowed him to perform successfully for more than a decade more. His voice was greatly admired by both critics and knowledgeable listeners. Nice but boring voice. Listen to Lanza sing Because. Passion in every note making it so exciting. Lanza was at his best in Italian, whereas Crooks was a master of French, Italian, and German, and his lieder singing received considerable praise from the critics.

I disagree. Lanza was good in French, and fantastic in English. He made every song his own with his great interpretive power. Passion in every word, soft or loud. Crooks spoke French fluently, as he did German and Italian. Lanza sounded great in Spanish too. And vice versa. Its the vocal suitability to the music which is most important to me.

So much of this is not binary, and some of the greatest Wagnerian tenors—Leo Slezak, capital among them—sang all the major Wagnerian roles, plus the Italian and French major roles, and was considered one of the finest lieder singers ever. But in everything Lanza did, he was to me vocal perfection coupled with passionate interpretation.

His operatic debut was in Tosca at Hamburg in and it was in this opera, that he chose to make his debut at the state opera in Berlin. It would have been interesting to hear his performance of Faust in Budapest. So, the first record of him, is from this early period.

Here is a Lohengrin extract, admired by critics, so wide apart in time, as Herman, Cline, and John Steane. Richard Crooks, American operatic debut was in Philadelphia in in Tosca. In he was offered the position as the resident singer in the coast-to-coast radio programme, Firestone Hour. He realized his greatest ambition on February 25th,for this was the occasion of his debut at the Metropolitan Opera house.

Richard Crooks, the young American tenor, made his Metropolitan Opera house debut on Saturday afternoon as Degaru in Manon, and won the immediate favour of one of the largest audiences of the season. He had many recalls after each act and after the performance. Mr Crooks has sung in opera in Europe and Philadelphia, a record sufficient in itself to excite interest.

But he had also made himself popular with the unseen audience, for he has long been one of the celebrities of the airwaves. His success, however, was not due to what he had done, but to what he did on Saturday. His achievement was one of present merit and much promise. It is unknown if Crooks' star has been removed, or was never installed in the first place, or was simply overlooked by the Times crew.
